Cohuna Consolidated School Profile:

P.S. 6211 Cohuna Consolidated School is one of three schools in Cohuna.
The school services a rural town (population 2 200), and its surrounding district to a distance of about 25 Km. radius. Within that area there are two other smaller rural schools - Gunbower and Leitchville.

Together, with St. Mary’s Catholic School, we form the feeder schools to Cohuna Secondary College. Both formal and informal networks have developed over the years, as a result of this situation. We are all members of the Cohuna Cluster to deal with the Drug Education Program, and more recently have joined forces to address the Middle Years of Schooling issues.

The school community consists of a broad cross-section of Australian society, although the school has very few children of migrant or aboriginal descent. Parents are engaged in rural, government or town occupations, and economic situations vary widely. The population is very stable however, and most children will attend this school for the whole of their Primary School education.

Parents and the wider community, are very enthusiastic in their praise of the school. It is well regarded, and enjoys good support amongst all sections. It is intended that this will continue, with the school reinforcing commonly held values, and preparing the children for further education and life.

The present building was first occupied in 1978, and consists of a modern, flexible and open design. The school is well resourced and is surrounded by spacious, well equipped grounds. Good use is made of these facilities by various groups in the community. Staffing at our school has been very stable over the years. To complement the facilities and resources provided for Integration, Reading Recovery, Library, Music, Art/Craft and Physical Education, teachers are allocated from within our staffing establishment, with the needs of children and staff planning time in mind.

The school offers sequential courses of study for Prep - Year 6 in English; Mathematics; Science; Technology; The Arts; Health and Physical Education; Studies of Society and Environment; and Language Other Than English (Indonesian).

Our immediate future plans include:
Extension and further support for the English and Mathematics Key Learning Areas
Continued development and implementation of the Learning Technology Plan
Projections for the next three years indicate an enrolment of around 230 students. These children are mainly fun loving, obedient, well mannered and co-operative students, willing to participate in a wide range of activities.

The school is well served by an active Parents' Club and School Council. Parents take an interest in their children's education, and many of them willingly involve themselves in school activities. Endeavours to broaden this participation, and further strengthen the communication between the home, the school and the community are constantly on our agenda.
